How a retail PO moves

Six steps, and each one is where a chargeback can start.

Retailers fine vendors for late, short or mislabeled shipments. EDI is the electronic exchange of order documents, an ASN (advance ship notice) tells the DC what's on the truck, and a routing guide is each retailer's rulebook for labels, cartons and pickups.

  1. 850

    Purchase order arrives

The retailer's PO reaches the warehouse through your EDI provider: DC, ship window, quantities.

  2. PICK

    Case-packed to the PO

Cartons picked, packed and counted to the PO and the retailer's case-pack rules.

  3. GS1-128

    Every carton and pallet labeled

A GS1-128 shipping label with its SSCC, placed where the routing guide says.

  4. 856

    ASN before departure

Shipment data for the ASN goes back through your EDI provider, so the DC knows what's coming.

  5. BOL

    Routed pickup

Parcel, LTL or truckload requested the way the routing guide says, inside the window.

  6. 810

    You invoice

You, or your EDI provider, invoice the retailer against what actually shipped.

You keep your EDI provider; the warehouse connects to it.

Questions

Before you send a routing guide.

Do I need my own EDI provider?

Usually, yes. Retailers exchange EDI documents with you, the vendor, and most brands use an EDI provider for that. The warehouse connects to the provider you already use; tell us which in the form. No provider yet? Say so, and we'll tell you what the warehouse needs from one.

Can website orders and retail POs ship from the same stock?

Yes. Our preferred Newark partner ships DTC parcels and retail cartons and pallets from the same building, so you don't split inventory between two warehouses or two systems.

My retailer isn't on your list. Can you still help?

Probably. Send its routing guide with the form or after we reply. The warehouse confirms it can meet the guide before you sign anything, and if it can't, we introduce partner warehouses that can.
